Juniors and seniors at Foran have been passing their license tests, allowing them to drive to school. This makes it significantly easier for people that have far walks or wake up early to wait for the bus. However, with the growing number of cars going in and out of school, security bears a much greater responsibility.
Coach Garrett Walker handles security and claims, “We utilize parking passes to better identify and monitor the safety of both staff and student vehicles that will be on campus for the day.”
These parking passes are typically emailed out to students on a google form for them to sign up.
Walker also says, “Our school sees a high volume of traffic on a daily basis, especially during arrival and dismissal. We do our best to make sure that a guard is always present during these times to ensure safe and mindful driving from all parties who come onto campus.”
With so much security outside, the goal is to make sure both pedestrians and drivers are safe when they transport to and from school.
Senior Venice Montanaro, who drives herself to school, states, “We have a bunch of different parking lots that work for different people and if you get there on time it’s really easy to get a parking space and there’s not much to worry about.”
Being able to drive and park in the school parking lots is just one benefit of getting a license; Montanaro also claims that life got more fun for her since she’s able to enjoy driving, listening to music in the car, and living in the moment.
According to Carmelo Nuno, a junior with his permit, “I practice driving at least 5 times a week around Milford and West Haven. I like cruising the beaches and backroads.”
People can choose anywhere they want to practice driving, as long as they are comfortable with their ability on that particular part of the road. Getting hours of experience with a permit helps prepare teenagers for their license test.
Senior Adriana Justo, who now has her own car and license, says, “I was terrified taking the license test and worried the whole time. But once he told me I passed it was such a relief.”
Justo later emphasized that she was excited to be able to hang out with friends in a more convenient way, and her favorite thing is to blast music at night with her friends in her car. It was also more practical for her to go to work more often, so she was able to make more money.
With more students enjoying the luxury of being able to drive, more fun and work opportunities have been introduced in their lives. And instead of waiting for the bus or walking to school, they can enjoy a faster commute back home and to the school.
