With fall sports coming to an end, winter sports, such as basketball are coming into play. This year’s girls basketball team introduced a new addition to the coaching staff, Mr. TJ Hair.

After his first year teaching physical education, Hair has decided to take on some new responsibilities. Currently, he is teaching physical education and health for sophomores and juniors. He has also been named JV head coach alongside varsity head coach Bob Asmussen.

Hair’s coaching background consists of four months at CBA (Connecticut Basketball Academy), a travel team out of West Haven. His experience in physical fitness and athletic training allows for a different perspective while coaching. He prioritizes player’s mental and physical health, which will keep the team healthy.

Senior Mary Rodriguez says, “His background as a trainer is helping the team get stronger for our season.” After talking to the players during their preseason conditioning sessions, it seems that Hair’s experience will benefit the girls in basketball and general fitness.

Wanting to get back into coaching, Hair decided to take the position of JV coach. He has enjoyed the sport since he was young and played throughout high school. He specifically likes girls basketball because it focuses more on offense and is less aggressive.

Hair shares, “I am excited to work in the community, getting to know the players and staff better.”

Senior Sam Young adds “The people and environment made me come back. I love being with the girls every day and building a better future for the program.”

Both Hair and Asmussen are ready and excited for this upcoming season.

Asmussen said, “Mr. Hair has great, positive energy that will push our team to be the best. He is involved, ready to learn, and is a strong role model to the girls.”

Pushing the girls to perform to the best of their ability is key for this upcoming season. Several players are returning, however, the team also has younger underclassmen with a lot of experience.

This will be the first year in full swing after Covid-19. Both players and coaches expressed that they are excited to play in front of a crowd. Without masks or restrictions, the girls can play to the best of their ability.

Rodriguez expresses her excitement for the winter season, especially for the Foran vs. Law game, and says, “We’re gonna get that win this year!”
