The tradition of Powderpuff has been ongoing since the 1970s. Cross town rivals Foran and Law start preparing for their game in the beginning of November.

Powderpuff is a flag football game that lasts for two twenty minute periods. Both teams have a total of 11 girls on the field at a time. In order to prepare for the upcoming game, each team has nine practices, giving the team about three weeks to learn everything about the game.

Assistant Coach Tammi Spose says, “It allows the girls to experience and excel at a sport that is often not thought of as one which is played by females…it also allows students who may not be traditionally competitive athletes to showcase their abilities on the field.”

This event provides the opportunity for upperclassmen to take part in something that promotes collaboration, competitiveness, and enjoyment. It is an outlet for all students to get the high school sport and team experience. The powderpuff team usually has around 60 participants, which is a big community of players.

Senior Jonna Lord shares, “ My favorite part of powderpuff is understanding the game of football more and being involved in the Thanksgiving traditions.”

In a short amount of time, these athletes come together to learn concepts and rules of the sport, building friendships on and off the field.

Foran Athletic Director Mr. Anthony Vitelli says, “It is great to see the Foran and Law communities competing and coming together during Thanksgiving week…. Both schools enjoy practicing, preparing a game plan and competing against each other.”

Although the team fell short to Law last year by two points, it only fueled their motivation to succeed this season. Their dedication to the game has increased, and their optimism has only grown.

Senior Colleen Ardolino was a key asset to the team last year, scoring their only touchdown. She truly enjoyed her powderpuff experience.

Ardolino comments, “Although we lost, it was still such a great experience. I was able to play with all of my friends, and challenge myself in a new sport. It was fun, and we all really got into it. This year, I have high hopes for a win, and I have confidence that our motivation is at an all time high.”

For those who would like to come show their support, the game will take place on Tuesday, November 22 at 6pm. This year the game will be played on Foran’s home turf.

All tickets are five dollars, and will be sold at the game. No lion pride passes will be accepted.

Assistant Coach Abbigail Blanchard says, “I’m excited for the team to show their stuff on our home field. We have high hopes that all their hard work will pay off.”
